Cats are fascinating creatures with their behaviors, habits, and unique ways of expressing themselves. One of the reasons they captivate us so much is their ability to understand humans in surprisingly different ways. Beyond their behavior, their physical traits also draw attention. Thanks to their flexible and athletic bodies, cats can perform incredible movements and sleep in unusual positions. One of their most interesting features is their paws. Although small, a cat’s paws are extremely important for their survival and daily life.
1. Number of Toes
If you take a closer look at your cat’s paws, you’ll notice that the front paws have more toes than the back ones. Cats typically have five toes on their front paws and four on their back paws. The extra toe on the front paw functions somewhat like a thumb.
2. Walking Style
Cats have an incredible anatomy. Even though it may look like they walk on their entire feet, they actually walk on their toes. Cats, dogs, elephants, and many other animals are digitigrade, meaning they walk on their toes. This adaptation helps them survive in the wild. Even dinosaurs, despite their massive size, are believed to have walked on their toes.
3. Polydactyl Cats
Just like humans, some cats are born with extra toes. This condition is called polydactyly and usually affects either the front or back paws. Polydactyl cats are also known as “Hemingway cats.” The famous American writer Ernest Hemingway had a polydactyl cat named Snowball, and many of its offspring inherited the trait. Descendants of Snowball still live in the United States today, many of them with extra toes.
Although polydactyly is often thought to be rare, it is actually more common in certain breeds—especially Maine Coon cats.
